Your Role: College Counselor

As a College Counselor at Uncommon, you will play a pivotal role in guiding students and their families through the college application journey. Your mission? To ensure that every student finds the right college or university that aligns with their aspirations and goals, setting them up for success in college and beyond.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach 11th and 12th grade college seminar courses, guiding students through the entire college application process, including career exploration, personal statement writing, resume building, and financial aid applications.
  • Foster a culture of college and career readiness by creating inspiring materials, advising on course selections, and organizing events like Career Day, SAT School Day, and College Visits.
  • Collaborate with parents and families to build positive partnerships through workshops and individualized meetings.
  • Enhance your expertise by participating in Uncommon professional development and attending regional and national conferences.
  • Build strong relationships with college admissions offices and advocate for your students throughout the admissions and financial aid processes.
  • Support the planning and execution of college visits and information sessions for students across all grade levels.

Qualifications:

  • A passionate commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools.
  • Experience working with high school students and families, particularly in urban settings with BIPOC students.
  • Strong initiative, ability to prioritize tasks, and work independently.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, perseverance, and maturity in managing competing priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
  • Proficient in using data to enhance the college counseling process.
  • Strong digital literacy, including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Naviance, and PowerSchool.
  • Required Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
    • Minimum of two years of experience in an urban district or charter school setting.

Compensation:

The salary for this role ranges from $50,000 to $64,700 . Most candidates who meet the job requirements will receive an initial offer between $50,000 - $52,000 . Starting pay is determined based on various factors, including relevant professional development, educational certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.
